What are RSS Feeds?

RSS Feeds are also known as feeds or just RSS. In recent years most people have come to believe this stands for 'Really Simple Syndication', this may not be entirely accurate and there is some debate on the topic but it is a very good decription for our use. In essence, the RSS feeds are web pages, designed to be read by computers as opposed to people. RSS webpages can be 'linked' or 'plugged in' to another webpages or programmes and the information is passed from one (the feed) to the other (the reader).

News feeds allow new content to be brought to you and published where you want it. In a Feed Reader such as iGoogle, Google Reader, Live Bookmarks or My Yahoo! to mention just a few. You can get the latest headlines and downloads in one place, as soon as it is published, without having to visit the websites you have taken the feed from, unless something in the feed catches your eye of course!

Feeds are not limited to just news, you can get Newsletters and Woodhouse FM Podcasts from us and much more from the web in general; weather and weather warnings, regional news, quotes / jokes of the day and much more.

Want to start using our feeds but don't know how?

In general, the first thing you need is something called a news reader (simply search the internet for any of the feed readers mentioned above, more are feed to use). This is software that checks the feeds and lets you read any new items that have been added. There are many different versions, some of which are accessed using a browser (and are a webpage) and some of which are downloadable applications that run on your computer.

Once you have chosen a news reader, all you have to do is to decide what content you want it to receive. Click on the relevent RSS button and you can subscribe to the feed in various ways using your web browers, for more details on these, please check their websites.
